I'm entertained, sometimes engaged, but yet to be grabbed.Wildermyth is an action RPG game in which the player is a hunter who, after being killed by a beast, is resurrected by a mysterious goddess. But I reckon a true masterpiece - which this game was hailed as by more than a few reviewers - grabs you pretty early on. There's a chance as I get deeper into it, some of these misgivings will evaporate. I should make it clear, I don't dislike this game and would certainly not say "Don't play it". "Goofball" seems like an attempt at whimsy, but one that seems more than a little bit out of place. Their characteristics - greedy, cowardly, brave, hotheaded, romantic, snarky, etc - seem strangely limited and in some cases juvenile. I'm not convinced this game has come up with that. You can commemorate their death, and even bring them back, but from the reviews I was expecting something epic here, some kind of masterful reimagining of the fantasy game character, their story and their progress. Perhaps I just haven't played enough (or well enough), but characters die quickly and relatively easily. I like the poetry, but am indifferent to much of the narrative. The writing is lovely (I really love the idea of crediting each writer for their respective contributions), but I'm not compelled by it. I think I was expecting something spectacular and revolutionary from the character development and storytelling and that's probably where I feel most underwhelmed. The hunter and warrior classes complement the mystics fairly well, although the warrior skills feel a touch dull compared with the others. The gameplay is challenging and some of the fighting is really good fun - the idea of the magical characters (mystics) "interfusing" with objects is really interesting and often enjoyable. The cardboard aesthetic is nice, although I like the monster design much more than the human characters, which are just a bit cutesy cartoony for my taste. I don't think I need to say it's a bad game to suggest those expectations weren't (or at least haven't yet been) met. It had come up over and over again in "best of 2021" lists and game reviewers were waxing lyrical. I came to this game in what is probably an unhealthy way: with the very highest expectations.
